The rules for business texts
Reminders and replies to customers are everyday business messages. Promotions count as marketing under the Spam Act, so a few rules apply.
Get permission first
Only send marketing texts to people who have agreed to hear from you.
Say who you are
Include your business name so people know who the text is from.
Make it easy to opt out
Offer a simple way to stop marketing texts, such as replying STOP, and act on it within five working days.
Texts come from your real mobile number, so customers can reply and you don’t need to register a sender name. Read the ACMA guide to spam rules
How does email to SMS work?
Send an email from your inbox, addressed using the customer’s mobile number, and it arrives as a text from your business mobile number. Replies come back to your inbox. We’ll send you the setup details when your service is ready.
Do I need a mobile number to send texts?
Yes. Texts are sent from a CloudLine mobile number ($13.20 a month), so customers can see who it is and reply.
Can several staff send from the same number?
Yes. Your team can send from the shared number in the app or the web portal, and replies can be copied to a shared email address.
Can I send to a list of customers?
Business SMS is built for everyday two-way texts with customers. If you want to send to a larger list, talk to us first and make sure everyone on it has agreed to hear from you.
Can texts show my business name instead of a number?
Not at the moment. Texts come from your mobile number so customers can reply. Business-name senders can’t receive replies and must be registered with the ACMA.
